Original Summary

Hey everyone! I'm a developer from Morocco, and I've been working on LogForge, a Python project focused on analyzing application log files and making the results easier to understand. GitHub repository: https://github.com/cybokruvlad/LogForge My GitHub profile: https://github.com/cybokruvlad What is LogForge? LogForge is a command-line log analysis tool built with Python 3.12+. The goal is to make it easier to process application logs, identify recurring errors, and generate structured reports instead of manually inspecting every line. Current features - Parses log lines matching the supported format. - Counts entries by severity level, including DEBUG, INFO, WARNING, ERROR, and CRITICAL. - Tracks recurring ERROR and CRITICAL messages. - Reports successfully parsed and invalid lines. - Exports analysis results as JSON. - Supports an "--include-events" option to include individual events in reports. - Rejects excessively long log lines, with a configured limit of 1,000,000 characters. Technical details I structured the project as a Python package using the "src" layout, with an emphasis on maintainability and testing. At my latest verified development checkpoint: - 18 tests passed. - Ruff checks passed. - Test coverage was reported at 98%. - CI was configured with a minimum coverage threshold of 95%. These are development test results, not independent performance benchmarks. Challenges and limitations The main challenge is making log analysis reliable without making the tool unnecessarily complicated. Some areas I'd like to improve include: - Supporting additional log formats. - Handling large log files more efficiently. - Managing memory usage when logs contain many unique error messages. - Improving the usefulness of reports for real-world debugging. The current implementation has a fixed maximum line length, and enabling event-level output can increase memory usage. I'd appreciate your feedback I'd especially like input from developers who regularly work with logs. Would you prioritize supporting multiple log formats or optimizing the current parser? How would you approach memory-efficient aggregation of recurring errors? What information would you expect from a useful JSON log analysis report? What edge cases should I add to the test suite? Is there anything you'd change about the architecture before I expand the project? I'm sharing this because I want to improve my engineering skills and build something genuinely useful, not just add features for the sake of it. Feel free to be critical. I'd rather hear about real weaknesses now than discover them later. Thanks for taking the time to check it out! submitted by /u/gauivzte [link] [comments]
