Hey everyone, If there are any anime, manga, or visual novel fans here, you probably know how frustrating existing databases (like MyAnimeList or AniList) are when you don't know the exact title. They work fine for broad genre tags like "Action" or "Sci-Fi", but they completely fail when you're trying to recall a forgotten story from a vague memory ("a boy whose arm transforms into a sentient blade") or searching for a very specific mood ("cozy winter solo travel" or "rivals who genuinely respect each other"). Even if you aren't into anime, I'd love your feedback on the search architecture and latency. I built Anime Akashic Records (AAR) for the community — a cross-media semantic discovery engine and free API indexing 144,000+ works and 444,000+ interconnected entities (characters, voice actors, directors, authors, studios) across Anime, Manga, Light Novels, Visual Novels, Manhwa, and Manhua. What it does under the hood: - Dual-path discovery for fans: Pinpoint forgotten "tip-of-the-tongue" titles from fragmented plot descriptions, or get recommendations by describing the exact emotional tone, character dynamics, and aesthetic vibe you want. - Sub-second native hybrid pipeline (~500ms): Fuses ScaNN-cascade dense vectors (Qdrant int8), FTS5 BM25 lexical search, in-memory character synergy aggregation, and Cross-Encoder reranking with zero LLM latency by default (plus an optional query_breakdown flag for complex queries). - Evidence-backed matches: Returns supporting synopsis excerpts alongside metadata so you immediately see why a title matched your description. - Free API for devs & AI agents: Includes a /search endpoint for structured hybrid retrieval and a conversational /ask endpoint that synthesizes citation-backed answers. I opened up a free public API gateway so developers, open-source AI agents, and hobbyists can integrate or test it immediately with no registration or credit card required (just pass the header x-api-key: aar_free_access).
