Original Summary

I built this because of two small things that annoyed me every single day. My girlfriend and I live in different countries and watch shows together over FaceTime. The second the call connects, macOS turns the show down to a whisper. There is no setting for it. Then I hurt my wrist and started dictating everything, and every time the dictation app turned on the AirPods mic, my music went muffled, like a phone call from 2005. Both have the same root: macOS treats any call or mic use as "lower everything else and drop the headphones to headset mode". CallLane fixes it with two tricks: Call apps get their own speaker called "CallLane". macOS only ducks that one, so music and video stay at full volume while the call plays at the level you set. It locks your Mac's input to the built-in or USB mic, so AirPods never switch to headset mode. That works for calls and for dictation apps like Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, MacWhisper and Apple Dictation. Setup is picking 'CallLane' as the speaker in each call app, once. Stack, for the curious: Swift and SwiftUI menu-bar app, a Core Audio driver forked from BlackHole (open source, GPL-3), Next.js site on Cloudflare, Dodo Payments for checkout and license keys. Signed and notarized, sold outside the App Store because the driver can't ship there. It's $9 one-time while I launch. First paying customers came from Singapore and the US, which was a fun surprise. It's at CallLane.app I'd love feedback on two things: does the site make the problem clear in the first few seconds, and which call or dictation app should I test next? submitted by /u/ravann4 [link] [comments]
