Original Summary
When you come from SWE and SRE, "engineering" is a word that has a specific meaning. And I went to GTM engineering looking for an opening to do the kind of "engineering" that I'm used to. What I've come to realize is that in GTM, there's indeed the kind of engineering I'm familiar with . But it's not 100% of the GTM engine, or even 80% as I was expecting. It's the 20% that delivers 80% of the outcome. The rest of the GTM engine is no-code and low-code operator tools. And those no-code to low-code operator tools are irreplaceable. Because my thinking in the early days was how to leverage my engineering skills to replace them. Admittedly, I was hopelessly naive. Until the day I fully understood they solve use cases so vast, trying to replace any one of them would be a waste of effort. No point spending months building another CRM (first step in outbound) or cold email infrastructure (last step in outbound) - or whatever step that's in between - when those components of an end-to-end GTM engine are readily available for immediate use. So, if 80-100% of a GTM engine can be built with no-code and low-code tools (RevOps), then where are the opportunities to do actual engineering (of the kind where a CI/CD pipeline is absolutely needed)? It's a relevant question because when your background (10+ years) is SaaS, you see/hear GTM "engineering" and go looking for a kind of engineering that's a very small to non-existent part of GTM. If you don't know where to look, you'll spend ~3 months in the wilderness like I did. Anyway, I managed to find the answer before I wasted too much of my life - bespoke TAM and SAM buildouts. Deploying the infrastructure to extract and maintain a list of laser-targeted and in-the-market ICPs. The 20% foundational work that delivers 80% of the impact. Of course, you can build your account universe with those mentioned no-code and low-code operator tools, but you'll be limited to extracting generic lists available to your competitors. And that's the same problem that led me to discovering where the actual engineering work lived . submitted by /u/vthoriti [link] [comments]
