Original Summary

Okayyyy so here's something I genuinely didn't think about when I started building my little satellite finder app Your phone has a compass, right? You'd think pointing it in a direction would be pretty straightforward Except the compass can get confused by nearby metal And what are you usually standing next to when trying to align a satellte dish? A giant piece of metal 😭 I thought that was pretty funny until I realizedd it's an actual problem. The app can calculate where a satellite should be. That's the relatively easy bit But showing someone the right direction is a different story when the phone's sensors aren't behaving One useful thing I learned: if you're using your phone to point anything outdoors, don't blindly trust the compass reading. Step away from metal objects, check the direction again, and use the actual equipment's signal reading to fine-tune things I've been working on this problem in a little app called SatAlign. It's such a ridiculously specific thing to spend evenings building after work lol. But it's also made me realize how many seemingly simple apps depend on sensors that aren't always reliable Anyone else ever started building something that sounded dead simple, only to discover the real problem was something completely unexpected??? submitted by /u/soil_under_my_nails [link] [comments]
