Original Summary

bird flu fyi is a free, ad-free, no-login map of confirmed H5N1 / avian-influenza outbreaks (wild birds, poultry, mammals, livestock, human cases). ~18,000 records across 116 countries since 2022, refreshed daily from USDA APHIS, EFSA/ECDC, Australia’s DAFF, FAO EMPRES-i and WHO. Stack: React 18 + MapLibre GL on OpenFreeMap tiles; Cloudflare Workers + D1 + KV — runs entirely on the free tier, no server. SSR so crawlers/LLMs get real prose. Browser push alerts via VAPID, using a free table + drain instead of a queue. Installable PWA. The interesting problem was honesty. Official sources lag and almost never publish an all-clear, so I show confirmations only (never “resolved”), label “recent” as a display window rather than an official status, and surface a banner when a source is stale (EFSA/ECDC is 8 weeks behind today). It’s a non-commercial public-interest side project. Feedback / roasting welcome. submitted by /u/Anxious_Fortune [link] [comments]
