Original Summary
Hi r/SideProject . This one's mine, so full disclosure up front, including the part some of you will care about: the current chapters are drafted with AI and then edited and finalised by me. Nothing goes live without my review. In the near future I would like to have guest authors. What it is Branchwriter is a web for novels. Every chapter ends with a choice about what the main character does next or how the story should continue. Readers vote, and the winning option becomes the next chapter. The options that lose don't disappear. They get written as alternate chapters, so every road not taken exists somewhere. Canon never goes down those roads, which means an alt is the only place that version of the story happens. The current story: Lyra comes back to the village she left at eighteen, because her grandmother has died and left her the bakery. She plans to sell it and leave by the end of the month. Then she finds her grandmother's sourdough starter still alive on the shelf, two weeks after anyone fed it. How it makes money (or tries to) Reading every canon chapter and voting are free, and will stay free. Subscriptions pay for the alternate chapters, early access and a few perks, and single alts can be bought on their own. Paddle handles payments as merchant of record, which as a solo founder in the EU saved me from dealing with VAT in every country myself. How it's built While working in a IT company, I'm not a developer myself. I built it with AI coding tools while I made the product, pricing and legal decisions. Next.js and Postgres, self-hosted on a small VPS, plus a Discord bot that opens a discussion thread for each chapter. The hardest constraint turned out to be editorial, not technical. Because the next chapter depends on the vote, I can never be more than one chapter ahead. What keeps it coherent is a fixed season spine (several possible endings (5-10), votes decide how the story gets there, closing some options on the way), a world bible and style guide behind every draft, and a check of each chapter against the open web for word-for-word overlap before it publishes. I have currently three people beta reading everything thst goes out. Where I'd love feedback Does "vote on what happens next" come across as a novel you read, or as a game? I'm not sure the homepage makes that clear. Would the AI drafting put you off, even with a human editing every chapter? How does the pricing looks to you? Would you be willing to pay for the content? It launched quietly this week, so it's early: 1 chapters so far, and the vote on the one is still open. https://branchwriter.com/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_campaign=sideproject I'll be around to answer anything. submitted by /u/EntertainmentCalm639 [link] [comments]
