Three years ago I just wanted to stop missing VR cam shows. They're live, and once the stream ended, the show was gone. So one evening I wrote a quick script that recorded them for me. It worked, so naturally I wanted it on a second site. Then a third. So I added Chaturbate, Stripchat (2D) and other sites like MyFreeCams. Then people started asking if they could use it too. Somewhere along the way the "quick script" became CaptureGem: a Go recording daemon with an Electron front end that people actually pay for and email me about. I still find that a little surreal. What it does is simple. You add the streamers you follow, it records automatically when they go live, and it stitches everything into one clean file when they go offline. Making that simple turned out to be anything but. A few honest lessons from three years in: Every streaming site does video its own way. HLS, fMP4, WebSockets, WebRTC. One site switches quality mid-broadcast and leaves half-written files behind. Another starts every stream in low-res for the first minute. I've learned to never assume. FFmpeg is incredible and has humbled me many times. I now pin an exact FFmpeg version for every release, after minor upgrades quietly changed how files got trimmed and joined. The sites change under you constantly. Cloudflare challenges, geo-blocked CDNs, new player formats. A lot of "maintenance" is just trying to notice breakage before users do (I don't always win). Support tickets are my real roadmap. Nearly every meaningful fix in recent releases started with someone patiently describing one weird recording. Those people are the reason the app is any good. Do less work and the app gets faster. A recent change I'm proud of: when a stream jumps from low-res to HD, the app now re-encodes only the low-res stretch instead of the whole hour. Some users' CPU usage dropped by half. It's still a small, scrappy project, and I'm still the one answering most of the emails.
