Original Summary
Hey everyone, Like many of you, I have a habit of keeping dozens of tabs open across multiple windows. Half of them are docs, articles, or PRs. But keeping them open eats memory, clutters the tab strip, and doesn't actually remind me when I need them. I initially built Latr to solve one specific problem: snoozing a tab so it closes immediately and reopens on its own at a scheduled time. Unlike typical bookmarking tools, it uses native browser text fragments to reopen the page right at the paragraph you stopped reading, without requiring broad permissions. Over the past few weeks, I completely overhauled the extension and expanded it from a simple tab snoozer into a full local-first tab workstation. I attached a 1-minute video showing the workflow in action, but here is a breakdown of the major upgrades: 1. Tab Search and Window Management Press Ctrl+K to search across all open tabs in any window with typo-tolerant fuzzy search. Quickly restore recently closed tabs in one keypress. Move tabs between windows or tile two tabs side-by-side. 2. Smart Duplicate Tab Cleanup Scans all open windows for duplicate URLs and highlights them. Normalizes URLs by stripping tracking parameters (utm_source, fbclid, ref tags, etc.) so identical pages are caught even if they came from Slack, Twitter, or email. Clean up all duplicates in a single click without losing your active tab. 3. Automatic Tab Grouping Rules Set conditions to automatically sort tabs into colored browser tab groups as soon as they open (for example, grouping github.com and documentation pages under "Work" or "Code"). Supports combined conditions and regex rules. 4. Visual Bookmark Board (Two-Way Sync) View your existing browser bookmarks as clean cards with actual page previews. Drag and drop to reorder bookmarks or move them into folders. Every change writes directly to your native browser bookmarks, so your data never gets locked in. 5. In-Page Highlights Highlight a sentence or snippet on any article, right-click, and save it. When you reopen the page from your library, the browser scrolls to and highlights that exact passage on the screen. 6. Serverless Tab Sharing Bundle and share up to 50 tabs in a single URL. All data is encoded into the URL hash fragment, meaning zero data is stored on or sent to any server. 7. Encrypted Backups Export your data with optional client-side AES-256 encryption using a passphrase. Privacy and Permissions The entire extension is local-first. There are no accounts, no signups, and no tracking. All your tabs, reminders, and bookmarks live in your browser's local storage. When installing, it does not ask for invasive permissions like "read and change data on all websites" (it uses activeTab only when triggered).
