Original Summary

I'm the maker, so take this with the usual salt. I had a talk coming up and recorded myself practicing. I said "um" 14 times in four minutes and had no idea. You don't hear it while you're talking. You only hear it on playback. So I built Unfiller. You tap record and talk. When you stop, it shows three numbers: fillers, words per minute, and length. The transcript highlights every filler, and tapping one plays the three seconds around it. That part is uncomfortable, and it works. The part I didn't expect was the pause map. It lays your take out as a timeline, and the ums almost always bunch up right before a pause. The um is you buying time. If you let the pause just be a pause, most of the fillers go away. A few choices I made on purpose: There's no counter on screen while you talk. Watching the number go up mid-sentence makes people freeze. Each retake is compared only to the one before it (like 7 → 3 fillers). There are no streaks, reminders, or charts. Most people use it for two weeks before an interview or speech and then stop, which is fine. Everything runs on the phone with Apple's on-device speech recognition. There's no account and nothing gets uploaded. "Like" and "so" only count when they're used as fillers. It isn't perfect, and it'll sometimes miss one or count one it shouldn't. It's English only and needs iOS 18.2 or later. Your first three analyses are free and complete. After that, free recordings stop at 20 seconds. Pro is $12.99 once, not a subscription. culi.app/apps/unfiller I'm curious whether the "ums right before a pause" thing holds for other people too, or if it's just me. submitted by /u/puncio [link] [comments]
