Original Summary
Online stores have a strange problem. A store can have 200 people on it right now, and every one of them sees an empty room. In a real shop, other people are part of the experience: a line at the counter, someone trying on the jacket you were looking at. So I built Live Shoppers, a Shopify app that shows a store's real shoppers to each other: - Product cards show how many people are viewing them - "Added to cart" and "just sold out" moments appear as they happen - During a sale or a drop, shoppers on the same page see each other's cursors, named after animals (Fox, Otter, Owl…) - Friends can shop together in one cart and check out once How it works: - A theme app extension adds one script (about 36 KB compressed) that starts after the page has loaded - A Node WebSocket server tracks who is on which page and sends counts and cursor positions - A cursor is anchored to the element under the pointer, not to pixels, so a laptop shopper's cursor lands on the same product on a phone - Shared-cart rewards run through a Shopify discount function, with signed cart tokens so nobody can fake a group - No personal data, no cookies. Every shopper is an anonymous animal. The hardest parts: - Looking right on any theme. There are six looks, and none of them may override what the merchant set in the theme editor. - App review. My first submission was rejected because the app crashed on the reviewer's very first install. Three requests tried to create the same settings row at once, and the database refused the duplicate. About 1 in 5 first loads failed. Easy to miss when you always test on a store that already has the app. It's live on the Shopify App Store now, with a free plan. I'd like feedback on the website: does it explain the idea in 10 seconds? (links in the first comment) submitted by /u/ironwolf321 [link] [comments]
