Original Summary
I keep and breed corn snakes and wanted to track their growth from photos. There are a few photo-measuring tools out there, but none had the features I wanted on a phone, so I built my own: Snake Measurer. How it works: take a photo of your snake from above with any object of known size next to it as a reference, like a ruler, a bank card or a coin (the bigger the reference, the better the accuracy). Mark the reference, enter its size, then trace the body. The app uses the reference to work out the scale and gives you the real length. You can also backdate old photos to rebuild a snake’s history. The parts I had the most fun with: Zoom, pan and a magnifier loupe, so you can place points precisely with a fat finger on a small screen Auto-detect: I spent a while digging through different approaches to finding the snake’s outline, and ended up combining several of them. It’s not perfect, but on a decent photo it often traces the whole snake in a single tap Growth charts per snake, plus an analytics view across measurements Shareable cards: a card for a single measurement, a profile card for the animal, and an analytics card with the growth chart. Handy for posting progress or sending to a buyer Works fully offline with no account. Sync between devices is optional (you only log in if you want it), and it’s careful about battery and mobile data There’s also a web version, with a lighter auto-detect Accuracy: usually within 5–7% of a tape measurement, as long as the reference is right next to the snake and the photo is straight from above. Angle is the biggest source of error. Tech, for the curious: Kotlin Multiplatform + Compose Multiplatform for iOS, Android and web from one codebase, Quarkus backend. Free to try (3 snakes + 30 saved measurements + 10 AI auto-detects), with a paid upgrade if you want unlimited. snakemeasurer.com Would love feedback, especially on the tracing UX and onboarding. What would make you actually use something like this? submitted by /u/Complete-Stay8202 [link] [comments]
