Original Summary

On Oct 4 I shipped month over month change per category in the Reports screen of Aurum, a manual entry personal finance tracker I'm building solo. Each category shows a line like "$X vs Sep." 2 design decisions went into it. In the current month, it compares against the same days of the prior month. If it used the full prior month, 4 days of October would be set against 30 days of September, and everything would look like you're spending less. Investments stay gray no matter which direction the number moves. Groceries going down shows green. Investments going down doesn't, because money moving into investments is a choice, not spending you're trying to shrink, so it shouldn't read as a win or a warning. Categories with nothing to compare show "No change" or "New" in gray too. Screenshot attached, with the Investments row next to the green ones. For anyone who's built a comparison feature: how do you handle partial periods? Same days, a projected full month, or something else? submitted by /u/Hellcat_20 [link] [comments]
