Original Summary
I've been building ReceiptIQ, an iPhone app that turns a receipt into a list of items for budgeting, on my own. A few weeks ago Japanese users (and my own receipts from a trip to Japan) showed me totals that were off by exactly the tax. I didn't know Japan prints two styles: - 内税: the tax is already inside the prices, so adding a tax line counts it twice - 外税: the tax is added at the end as its own line On top of that, 小計 / 合計 / お預り / お釣り (subtotal / total / cash given / change) sit right next to each other, and it's easy to take the wrong one as the total. I checked the app against over a thousand Japanese receipts and went through the hard ones by hand. A 1-star rating from a Japanese user is what pushed me to do it properly. Version 2.5.0 came out today and handles both styles. Question for other builders: what country- or locale-specific surprise caught you out after launch?
