Original Summary

I made this, so full disclosure up front. One of my apps uses ElevenLabs for a bit of text-to-speech. The $5 plan gives 90,000 credits a month and I was using a small fraction. The rest expired every month, which annoyed me. So I built SayHowTo : type any word or name and hear it said. The trick that makes it work on $5: Every clip is generated once , stored, and served to everyone after that. The second person to look up "Worcestershire" costs nothing. A GitHub Action runs two days before my credits reset and spends whatever's left on new words. It always keeps 20k credits back for my real app. If credits ever run out, it falls back to the browser's built-in voice, so nothing breaks. First month: 8,569 clips from ~67,700 credits . Short words are cheap, under 10 credits each on average. What's on it: US, UK and Australian voices, a slow button, and an easy respelling (WUUS-tur-shur) Names people get wrong (Saoirse, Siobhan, Timothée Chalamet) and a free "hear my name" link for email signatures "How to say hello / thank you in X" guides, with native Spanish, Japanese and Arabic voices Type in one language and hear it in another (28 languages) A kids' section: sight words with audio and a spelling test that reads the words aloud Free, no sign-up, no ads. Stack: Next.js, Supabase (free tier), ElevenLabs, Vercel. I'd love feedback, especially if a word sounds wrong, or if there's a feature you'd actually use. submitted by /u/Away_Gap2110 [link] [comments]
