Original Summary
I do a lot of my running on a treadmill through the Ontario winter, and an hour staring at a wall gets old fast. So I built SummitRoom: pick a real course (Boston, NYC, Chicago, Toronto Waterfront, Pikes Peak, the West Coast Trail and more) and run it on a live 3D map while the incline follows the course's actual hills. How it works If your treadmill has Bluetooth (the standard FTMS profile), the browser connects to it directly, reads your speed and sets the incline itself as each hill arrives. No Bluetooth? Type in your speed and it tells you what incline to set. Run a whole marathon, or fit the course into a 5K, 10K or half. Long courses carry over between runs (the Cocodona 250 is 386 km, so that one takes a while). When you finish, it posts to Strava as a Virtual Run with the real route map. The stack, for the curious Vanilla JS, no framework. The main file is… large. I know. Web Bluetooth for the treadmill, Mapbox GL for the 3D map and terrain Vercel serverless functions and Postgres The Android app wraps the site (a Trusted Web Activity), so it's one codebase Courses built from public GPS and elevation data Harder than I expected "Standard" Bluetooth treadmills aren't that standard. Some report incline but ignore commands, and some drop the connection mid-run. iPhone Safari has no Web Bluetooth at all, so iOS users need another browser or manual mode. Making the incline feel right. Following the slope under your feet makes the belt twitch constantly, so it averages the grade over the stretch you're about to run. Running courses is free. A new account gets 14 days of Pro (structured training sessions) with no card, then it's $5 a month. What I'd love feedback on The first minute: from landing on the site to your first run, is it obvious what to do? Would you actually use this? If not, what would change your mind? If you have a Bluetooth treadmill, did it connect? What brand? https://summitroom.app submitted by /u/datastuffplus [link] [comments]
