I’m a clinical psychologist building The Path, a short interactive story for reflection and self-understanding. I thought I understood what I was building. One of the important parts of the experience is slowing people down. To notice. To stay for a moment and experience what’s there. Then the data showed me something I probably should have understood earlier. People also need very little friction to begin. My first version made the onboarding really slow, with multiple screens before the actual experience began. You know, to get people ready for the self-exploration journey! (lol) Clinically, that feels obvious to me now. You can invite someone into reflection, but first they need to actually enter the room. I simplified the onboarding. The Episode 1 start rate moved from about 13% to 20%. And I got humbled, because I realized I had been treating my assumptions like knowledge. I know a lot about helping people reflect once they are in a process. I know much less about what makes a stranger click a link and actually begin one. That is probably the most useful thing this MVP has taught me so far. I need much more data before I can pretend I understand that first step. The writing is all mine.
