Original Summary
I've been a developer for close to 7 years and I had the itch to build something of my own. What I wanted was to go from whatever I was watching to a transcript I could trust without all the friction, and the tools I tried were hit or miss, especially on long recordings. I knew how crowded transcription was before I started, new ones come out every week, so I went in expecting to make nothing. I figured that worst case I'd have something to show my skills with, and that if I wasn't expecting money then the disappointment couldn't be too bad. I thought it would take a week or two and it ended up taking 8 or 9 months, because I was doing it alone next to a full time job, so it was evenings, weekends and even vacations with the laptop. I don't think I've had a single day off since the start of this. A lot of that time I wasted. I spent way too long looking for a way out of anything that cost money, because I assumed it would never earn a dollar and so it had to cost me almost nothing, and that really wasn't worth it. I also kept pushing the launch back for months, because long recordings turned out to be hard. Getting a transcript to hold up over a 10 hour stream, and then making it easy to fix what's still wrong, is where most of the work went. On top of that I kept adding things, like a browser extension that I never planned and then decided I couldn't launch without. I did zero marketing during all of this, no ads and no posts, and I didn't even tell anyone about it, so the only way people found it was through search. Then the same day I finished testing billing in May, a $100 yearly subscription came in from a complete stranger, and a $10 one from someone else two hours later (both are still subscribed). I remember the rush of emotions. It's peanuts compared to a salary, but a dollar from something you own is like nothing else, especially after so many nights of thinking what's the point when nobody would even know or care if I stopped. It never kept that pace, but every month since has brought in between $100 and $250, and right now it's at $955 in total with 18 active subscriptions and about $177 a month (screenshot in the comments). I only started talking about it two weeks ago. It also went up on Product Hunt this morning and got featured, and my expectations there are the same as they've always been. I won't tell anyone to jump into a crowded market, because that would be survivor bias and this is still crumbs. If I had to say something, it's that there should be a gap you feel yourself that the other products don't fill, and that money can't be the only reason or you'll probably quit. It's called vocascript: https://vocascript.com You can try it with no signup (5 minutes a file). A free account does 25 minutes per run, and you can run it again on the same file to pick up where it stopped, up to 2 hours a month. If you try it, tell me what's missing that wou
