Original Summary
I've spent the last few months building a moderation pipeline for apps with user uploads: images, video and text. A few things surprised me, and I'd love to hear how others handle them. 1. A single "unsafe" score isn't actionable. Most tools give you one number and you pick a threshold. But "unsafe" means different things on different products. Alcohol is fine on a restaurant review app and not fine on a kids app. Separate labels (nudity, weapons, drugs, etc.) with their own confidence turned out to be much more useful than one score. 2. Text inside images is a big blind spot. Memes, screenshots and product photos often carry the bad content in the text, not the picture. Running OCR and checking that text caught things the image models missed completely. 3. Context changes the answer. A knife in a cooking video is fine. The same knife with a threatening caption is not. Checking the media and the text together cut down false positives a lot. 4. You need to explain every decision. When a user appeals, or a partner asks why something was blocked, "the model said 0.82" isn't enough. Keeping a log of which label fired and which policy rule applied saved us a lot of back and forth. 5. Speed vs accuracy is a real trade-off, and video makes it harder. Users don't want to wait for uploads to clear. We ended up running detectors in parallel for a fast first answer, then an optional slower second review for borderline cases, done async so it doesn't block the upload. For those of you running products with user uploads: Do you build moderation in-house or use a vendor? How do you handle different rules for different parts of your product? What's the hardest type of content for you to catch? What made you switch providers, if you did? (Disclosure: I'm building a tool called RavenSight around these ideas. Not linking it here, I'm mainly interested in how others solve this. Happy to share if anyone asks.) submitted by /u/Effective-Host-6855 [link] [comments]
