Original Summary

In 2023, I arrived in Brazil as a refugee. My Portuguese was pretty much non-existent, and I had zero money for tutors or paid courses. Like many people, I started with Duolingo, but I quickly realized it wasn't actually teaching me how to speak. For a long time, I felt like I was running in place. Even though I knew Duolingo wasn't working, I had no idea where else to turn every platform demanded a paid subscription, and even then, I barely felt any real progress. Things only started moving when I put together my own deck of the most frequently used words. Memorizing those core translations drastically improved my listening and reading comprehension, but I was still getting lost with idioms, fixed expressions, and especially grammar. Anki just couldn't solve that part of the problem for me. Once I finally got more or less comfortable with the language, I decided to turn everything I had put together into the exact app I desperately needed when I first landed. It's called Jeremy Portuguese , and it's out now on iOS and Android. It is strictly focused on Brazilian Portuguese and includes: 5,000 most common words sorted by frequency using spaced repetition 15,000 practice phrases across 9 different study modes 22 practical grammar topics with exercises 11 mini-games Audio pronunciation for every single word and phrase To make it accessible to as many immigrants and learners as possible, the entire app and all study materials are fully translated into English, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Haitian Creole, and Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional) . The entire thing works 100% offline . I know how critical offline functionality is, especially when you're starting out in a new place and constant internet access isn't guaranteed. There are no subscriptions, no paywalls, no ads, no accounts to create, and zero personal data collected. It’s completely free. If you’re learning Brazilian Portuguese or planning a move here, I hope this saves you the months of frustration I went through. You can find download links at jeremyportuguese.online or search for Jeremy Portuguese in the App Store / Google Play. I’d love to hear your feedback! submitted by /u/Additional_Hope_2031 [link] [comments]
