Original Summary

solo dev here. most WordPress calendar plugins put recurring events behind the paid tier, and for a church, a yoga studio or a library that's basically the whole calendar. so I built one where recurring is free and the paid part is tickets and RSVPs. what I've learned so far: downloads aren't installs. wordpress.org shows around 980 downloads and fewer than 10 active sites cold emailing venues to switch calendar plugins went nowhere, one polite no out of roughly 95. emailing the agencies that build those sites got actual replies, one of them has a client to move in january importers mattered more than features. nobody switches calendars if it means retyping 200 events, so it now imports from 9 other plugins and redirects the old event links the part I'm proudest of is the recurrence engine (RRULE, timezones, changing one date of a series without touching the rest). the part I underestimated was everything after shipping it's free on wordpress.org and you can try it in the browser with sample events, nothing to install: https://wordpress.org/plugins/beacon-events/?preview=1 if you've grown a WordPress plugin past the first handful of installs, what actually worked? submitted by /u/thejester1324 [link] [comments]
