Original Summary
I wanted a better way to practise English "shadowing" with real YouTube videos, so I built Shadowly : paste a video → it picks the best lines → you listen, speak along, record yourself, and get scored on pronunciation, fluency and rhythm. 🔗 https://shadowly-english.vercel.app (free, no sign-up) How it works Next.js 15 on Vercel's free tier, with no database : everything lives in the browser session Reads the video's English captions, then uses OpenAI to choose good shadowing lines and pull out vocabulary/phrases The YouTube IFrame API plays exact sentence ranges, with the current line highlighted as it's spoken Recording uses MediaRecorder in the browser, with a live waveform; the audio is transcribed and compared with the target sentence for scoring Most annoying problem: caption fetching worked perfectly locally but failed on Vercel. YouTube flags cloud-server IPs as bots and returns LOGIN_REQUIRED , which looks exactly like "this video is private". I ended up trying several YouTube clients first and falling back to a transcript API (Supadata) only when the server gets blocked. Would love feedback on the UX, especially the listen → shadow → record flow. And if you've solved the YouTube-blocks-cloud-servers problem in a nicer way, I'm all ears. submitted by /u/aungthuhein_dev [link] [comments]
