Original Summary
I recently created a program for a customer that I believe may have some commercial appeal and I wanted to bounce this off of you all. My customer's organization was out of control on how much people used excel, rather than the ERP system that which should handle everything. So I created the Excel Usage Monitor. This essentially has two parts. The first part is a background job that ran on every machine on the domain which monitors every single time Excel is opened. It records the name of the workbook, whether or not the workbook has power queries, VBA, pivot tables, etc. It also records who opened it and for how long. And if they change anything or not - just a true/false field. All of this data is saved to a SQL database. The second part is a series of reports that is used to analyze all these excel files and determine, hopefully, which ones are used to bypass the ERP system or or any less than ideal reasons. For example, there was a employee that was recording lot control information - which is required by the FDA - in excel, where is it absolutely should have been in the ERP system. In the ERP system, it is much easier to handle recalls and things of that nature. It was the CFO who commissioned this program to be written. But it was a fun project and it definitely opened a few eyeballs as to where and how excel was being used. So How would I determine if this has actual commercial potential? How the hell would I market it? submitted by /u/dgillz [link] [comments]
