Original Summary

I wanted to hold myself accountable for reading, but I also wanted to learn more from the time I spend with a book. That's why I built Faria. It's an iPhone app for reading physical books. You can keep selected distracting apps blocked until you meet your reading goal. While you read, you can ask about a word or a passage out loud and hear the answer without switching to a browser. It's voice controlled and conversational, so you shouldn't have to pick up your phone while you read. One of my favorite parts is saving lines: read a passage aloud, save it, and it comes back to you as a notification throughout the day. The things you wanted to remember get another moment of your attention after you've closed the book. It also helps with the moments when understanding something would otherwise interrupt the session. When I was in school reading psychology and neuroscience textbooks, sometimes I needed a diagram alongside a definition. Faria lets you look up a term and bring up a photo. If you've forgotten an earlier concept, you can ask about it instead of digging back through old notes. Sometimes I'm reading a philosophical text and just need help untangling what the author is saying. Faria gives me some guidance while leaving room to arrive at my own understanding. How it's built: SwiftUI on the phone, live speech recognition while you read, a natural voice for the answers, and Apple's Screen Time APIs for the app blocking. The hardest part has been telling when you're talking to it and when you're just reading aloud. Until recently it tried to look up "thanks" as a word, and the speech recognizer kept hearing its own name as "Feria" or "Sorry". All fixed now. It's iPhone only for now, and answers need an internet connection. The Mac app is coming next. It is a paid app, but if you'd like to try it free for two weeks, message me and I'll send you a code. Happy reading! Faria on the App Store submitted by /u/treaty999 [link] [comments]
