Press ⌥Space, type, and it searches the names and contents of your files (text, code, PDFs, Word/RTF). Each result shows the line that matched, so you can see why it's there. What it does well: - Fast. On my Mac (M3, 8 GB, about 60,000 files) a typical search takes 6.6 ms. The same queries through Spotlight took around 150 ms. - Typo tolerant. "screnshot" still finds your screenshots. - New files are searchable in under half a second. - Filters like kind:pdf, in:projects, after:2025-01, size:>10mb. - Everything stays on your Mac. No account, no network, no telemetry. What it doesn't do: - It only indexes folders you choose, not the whole disk. - It's a file search, not a launcher: no apps, mail or calculator. - Spreadsheets, presentations and images are found by name only. - Spotlight was faster on two-letter queries. It's free. Source, build instructions and the benchmark (including where Spotlight wins) are here: https://github.com/SpaceCypher/LocalSearch There's no packaged download yet, so for now you build it from source. macOS 14 or later, tested on Apple Silicon only. What would make you switch from what you use now, or what stops you? submitted by /u/Patient-Towel-4840 [link] [comments]
