Original Summary
When you remember a loss, do you remember one bad move or a slow slide, and which one actually happened? Are your losing streaks one story told over and over, or a different story every time? When does a story you keep telling about your games stop being a story and start being your identity, like "I'm an attacker" or "I always find a way back"? These are questions about autobiographical memory, which is what I studied for years while getting a PhD in cognitive psychology. A year ago I wanted to get back to that research, and chess turned out to be the perfect place to ask those questions. In everyday life you can rarely check someone's story against what actually happened. In chess, every move is recorded, so you can. Like most people, I started by throwing everything into an LLM... then realized that's what everyone would do (didn't feel like such an easy guess back then lol). So I set out to build new engines and instruments, with no LLM, to read chess games from a narrative angle. One of my favorite quotes is Muriel Rukeyser's "The universe is made of stories, not of atoms," so I wondered whether chess is made of stories, not just squares. The result is the StoryArc engine, which runs on top of Stockfish. Like personal stories, chess has recurring motifs and story beats. Single-game reviews show where a game actually turned, whether it was one bad move or a slow slide, and connect your past games to the one in front of you. Multi-game reviews look at a whole session at once and show when you're playing out the same story again and again. And the My Stories page lays storylines over your rating climbs and falls, so you can see which stories keep coming back and which ones have become part of how you play. Site: storyarcchess.com If you try it on your own games, I'd love to know: does the story it tells match the one you tell yourself? Any other feedback or ideas are welcome too. submitted by /u/StoryArc_Chess [link] [comments]
