Most role play chat apps send every message to a server and keep it. I wanted one where that's impossible by design, so in Local Character everything runs on your own GPU inside the browser tab (WebGPU): Gemma 4 E2B writes the replies, Kokoro speaks them and Whisper handles speech input. What that gets you: no sign-up, no message limits, it's free, and your chats live only in your browser. You can check that in the network panel: your text never appears in a request. What it costs: it's a 2B model, so replies are simpler than big cloud models. It needs Chrome or Edge 137+, and the first chat downloads about 2 GB once. After that, replies take about 6-8 s on an Apple Silicon Mac.
