Hey r/SideProject ! I wanted to share a native Mac app I’ve been solo-building over the last few months, along with the results and technical stack behind it. Why I built this: By day, I’m a software team lead and developer. Like many of you, I spend 8–10 hours a day sitting in front of a Mac balancing deep code/architecture work, meetings, and project delivery. I built Bookidoro because I needed a tool that respected my context—something lightweight that wouldn't steal keyboard focus, wouldn't pop up during Zoom/Slack calls, and would help me make steady progress on my reading list without taking time away from work or family. The solution I built Bookidoro a native macOS menu bar app that connects your work breaks directly to your reading queue. Instead of leaving you to scroll your phone, when a work stretch ends, a calm overlay opens right on your screen showing the next 1–5 pages of your book. You read a couple of pages, click Done , and get right back to work. Doing 2 pages per break × 6 breaks a day adds up to ~12 pages daily (~350 pages a month). In the last 2 months using it full-time, I’ve finished 4 complete books while working a full-time engineering job. ⚙️ Tech Stack & Architecture Highlights Pure Native macOS (macOS 13+): Built using Swift/SwiftUI for Apple Silicon and Intel. No heavy Electron wrappers, zero Dock clutter, zero keyboard focus stealing while typing. Native iCloud Drive Sync (v0.5+): Multi-device sync for Library, reading progress, and stats using native iCloud APIs. No custom backend, no Supabase/Firebase, and no external user databases. Drop-In iCloud Folder: You can drop any PDF or EPUB directly into iCloud Drive → Bookidoro and it automatically appears in your Library across all your Macs. Meeting Awareness: It monitors system flags for active mic, camera, or screen-sharing usage (Zoom, Meet, Slack, Teams) so breaks never interrupt a meeting—they wait until ~1 minute after your call ends. Local & Private: Zero third-party analytics/telemetry, no accounts required. 💰 Monetization All core features (Library, themes, statistics, timer, iCloud sync) are 100% free to use forever .
