Original Summary

The trigger was the "iPhone Storage Almost Full" alert and the offer to buy more iCloud. I didn't want more storage, I wanted to know what was in there. So I wrote a scanner and ran it on my own phone. 19,114 photos and videos, 145.85 GB. What it found: - The same video saved several times, because every messaging app re-encodes and hands it back to you. - Bursts and near-identical shots. Dozens of almost-the-same photo. - Live Photos: the hidden video half of each one was 28.66 GB on my phone. Twenty-eight gigabytes of three-second clips I never look at. - Blurry shots, screenshots from 2019, 800 MB videos of nothing. That scanner became Sanctum Cleanup, out today. What it does and doesn't do: - Scans on the device with Apple's Vision framework. Nothing is uploaded, there's no account, no analytics, no ads. - Groups copies of photos AND videos, similar shots (with the best one marked), large videos, screenshots, blurry photos and Live Photos. - You see every item full size before anything happens. Videos play, Live Photos play. - Delete goes to Recently Deleted, so you get 30 days to change your mind. It never deletes anything by itself. - Live Photos: "Keep still only" turns one into a normal photo and frees the video half. - Scans can run in the background and notify you when done. Results are saved, with a history. - Free. No in-app purchases. No subscription. I'm not touching that "$9.99 a week" business model. Why free: it's a one-person studio and this is the app I wish had existed when I got that alert. Honest disclosure: I also make a paid photo vault, and Cleanup has a "Hide" button that sends a photo there if you have it installed. It works completely without it. Things I learned: - Vision's feature prints don't run in the Simulator at all. Test on a real phone. - Thumbnails from PhotoKit need the synchronous, high-quality request off the main thread or you get error 3303 at scale. - Faking a Live Photo in the Simulator is impossible; Apple's content identifier isn't writable. iPhone only for now.
