We’ve all gotten these comments: “This should be free.” “How dare you charge $4.99/year?” “There’s no reoccurring costs, how dare you charge subscription” “I could build this with AI in 10 minutes.” Good. Do it. I dare you. Build something you find useful and give it away for free. Pay Apple $99/year. Spend $100 or whatever on AI/dev tools to build it. Spend another $20/year forever having AI fix whatever Apple broke and update the UI for the new iOS. Learn Xcode, certificates, provisioning, App Store Connect, review guidelines, debugging, and then spend your own time maintaining it. Using those reasonable hypothetical numbers, you’re already at $219 the first year before valuing a single hour of your time. Or pay me $4.99. I’m one dude who builds little iPhone utilities that should have shipped with the operating system. Then friends and family want them, so I put them on the App Store. If Apple adds these features natively in iOS 28 and kills my apps, fantastic. I get what I wanted and can stop maintaining them. Until then, if something I maintain saves you enough annoyance to be worth $4.99/year, awesome. If not, keep your $4.99. Just don’t tell indie developers maintaining software costs nothing because the app doesn’t have a server. Alright, off my soapbox.
