I used to find English classes painfully boring. I tried Duolingo too, but never felt like much of it made its way into conversations. Then I got into some TV series like Friends and Gossip Girl. Suddenly I wanted to understand a joke without reading the subtitles, or figure out what someone really meant. I’d look up an expression because I was curious, and it would stick because I remembered the scene. Over time, English became a way to meet people and make friends. That ended up being the best part of learning it. A few friends and I have been building something inspired by that experience. It’s called Catchi: you watch short dramas in English, with little activities along the way to practice what you’ve just heard.
