A lot of small SaaS teams don't have a cloud-cost problem at first. They have an infrastructure-growth problem. You start with one EC2 instance, a small RDS database, maybe S3 and a simple GitHub Actions pipeline. Everything is cheap and easy to understand. Then the product grows. Suddenly there are multiple environments, load balancers, NAT gateways, EKS, extra databases, logs, snapshots, monitoring tools, and resources that nobody is quite sure are still being used. The AWS bill goes up, but the obvious reaction is usually: "We need to reduce AWS costs." I'd start somewhere else. Find out what is actually driving the cost. For example, I'd look at: Which services account for most of the monthly spend NAT Gateway and data-transfer costs EBS volumes and unused snapshots RDS instance size and storage EKS node utilization Load balancers that aren't serving meaningful traffic CloudWatch/logging costs Resources created for testing that were never removed Whether non-production environments are running 24/7 One thing I wouldn't do is blindly start downsizing everything. If an application is using 80% of its CPU and you cut the instance size because it's expensive, you've potentially turned a cost problem into a production problem. The same applies to Kubernetes. If EKS is costing more than expected, the answer isn't automatically "move away from Kubernetes." Sometimes the actual issue is oversized nodes, poor pod requests/limits, idle workloads, or simply running Kubernetes for a workload that doesn't need it. I'd rather make the infrastructure understandable first. Even something as simple as having: Environment → Service → Owner tags consistently applied to resources makes investigating a large AWS account much easier. Cost optimization isn't always about finding the cheapest AWS service. Sometimes it's about removing infrastructure that shouldn't exist in the first place.
