Original Summary
TL:DR At the bottom. I got done cleaning my room one day and thought to myself how satisfying it is to tidy things up, put things back where they belong, dust things off, make your space clean. It makes you feel good and it satisfies a certain part of the brain, makes you feel productive, at least for me. So as I was sitting around one day I thought to myself, maybe I can kill two birds with one stone. I could practice some of my less than proficient programming skills, and make something fun from an idea born out of a real experience. A week or so of work later and I had built this: https://bedroom-cleanup-game.vercel.app/ The goal I set for myself is to not just go to claude and type "make me cleanup top down game" and then copy and paste everything. I wanted to actually learn, to know how things would work and connect with each other. That's not to say I did not use AI. I used AI as a sort of, guide/teacher. Had it ask me questions to solve on my own, walk me through/explain to me how each individual part of the project worked, and I tried to limit myself from just saying "do this for me quick no mistakes". The idea behind the game was I'd create the engine first, the dragging, the snapping, limiting the furniture to the room boundaries, and so on. Eventually I wanted to add pixel art to it, to make the furniture well, look like actual furniture rather than a bunch of colorful rectangles. I haven't gotten to that part yet. At the end I realized maybe this engine can be used for a different idea/game, and not be limited to the drag around furniture into its respective spots idea. The act of sitting down and actually thinking through the problem at hand, and then seeing the solution work, to me it's one of the reasons to continue programming and want to create random things that spawn out of an idea. Sure I could have told ai to make me this in half an hour and it probably would have done a better job, but I wouldn't have learned and I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. So many things nowadays are all about profit and money and selling your hobbies and jobs and you have to hustle and grind. The goal here wasn't to make an international corporate app to generate billions of dollars, but it was just to take an idea, make something fun out of it, and learn along the way. https://github.com/GoodGuyFate/bedroom-cleanup-game TL:DR: Built a top down room cleaning game to practice my skills, sometimes you should just create for the sake of creating and having fun with it. submitted by /u/xTheFatex [link] [comments]
